Philippine authorities have formally opened an investigation into Thomas Markle, the father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, following reports that he allegedly possessed child sexual abuse materials in his home in Cebu province. The Department of Justice confirmed on Friday that its anti-trafficking task force is handling the matter, marking a significant international step in a case that has drawn global attention due to the subject’s high-profile family connections.
The Duchess of Sussex issued a statement to CBS News on Friday expressing that she is deeply distressed by the news. She stated that her primary concern is the welfare of children and that she hopes the legal process will fully serve justice. Her comments came as the investigation gained momentum, with state media confirming that the probe focuses on an octogenarian American national who allegedly left videos and photos of abuse in his residence.
In her statement, Meghan revealed that she had been aware of the troubling allegations against her father since 2018. She explained that a letter containing these disturbing claims was sent to the Metropolitan Police and the Royalty and Specialist Protection unit in the United Kingdom at that time. The duchess said the letter was subsequently shared with her and that she was given assurances at the time that the matter was being investigated.
However, sources indicate that the Metropolitan Police has not conducted a full investigation into Thomas Markle and is not currently doing so. A spokesperson for the Met acknowledged that the force is aware of media reports stating that officers from its Royalty and Specialist Protection Command helped pass on a letter in 2018. The spokesperson noted that the department is undertaking internal enquiries to confirm the details of that correspondence.
The current probe was triggered by a report made by Thomas Markle Jr., who told the British tabloid The Sun on Thursday that he had reported his father to Philippine authorities. The younger Markle allegedly discovered the materials in storage boxes at the family home. He said he first saw some of the content after switching on an old cell phone at the property while his father was in the United States receiving treatment for a stroke and a blood clot.
According to reports from The Daily Mail, Thomas Jr. initially reported the discovery in July to the FBI hotline, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, and state police in Pennsylvania. The Daily Mail also reported that the senior Markle denied the allegations, stating that he has never downloaded such material and dismissing the claims as sick lies.
Meghan also used her statement to address the long-standing estrangement between herself and her father. She clarified that her decision to distance herself and limit his contact with their children was made for one specific reason: to protect them. She expressed hope that the public can now understand this motivation, despite what she described as distortions in certain media publications over the years.
The investigation is being conducted by a specialized unit within the Department of Justice, highlighting the seriousness with which Philippine officials are treating the case. A Filipino justice official confirmed to the state-run Philippine News Agency that Thomas Markle Sr. is the specific subject of the inquiry. The agency noted that the department is looking into reports involving the American national who allegedly stored the materials in his home in Cebu province.
As the probe proceeds, the focus remains on verifying the evidence and ensuring the safety of those involved. The Duchess’s statement emphasizes that the priority is the protection of innocent children, a sentiment that resonates in a case that bridges two continents and involves a figure of significant public interest. The outcome of the Philippine investigation will likely have far-reaching implications for the Markle family and the public narrative surrounding the Sussexes.
