Tension has intensified around the family of the Duchess of Sussex following reports that her father, Thomas Markle Sr, allegedly possessed child sexual abuse images. Meghan Markle has described herself as deeply distressed by the allegations, which emerged after her half-brother claimed to have found a collection of such images at their father's former residence in the Philippines. The development has drawn renewed attention to the estranged relationship between the duchess and her father, as well as to the timeline of when authorities first became aware of the suspected misconduct.

Markle Jr, 60, told detectives in the Philippines that he discovered hundreds or potentially thousands of images on computers and mobile phones stored in four large boxes in Cebu. He also reportedly contacted the FBI, which stated it would support local authorities and investigate any federal violations of US law. While Markle Sr has denied the claims, calling them sick lies in an interview with the Daily Mail, Philippine officials have confirmed that the matter is under active investigation. A taskforce specializing in human trafficking and child sexual exploitation in Cebu is currently handling the case.

In a statement issued through a spokesperson, Meghan revealed that the Metropolitan Police made her aware of disturbing allegations against her father as early as 2018. She explained that a letter sent to the Met's Royalty and Specialist Protection unit, known as Rasp, was shared with her after her wedding. The duchess said she was assured the allegations were being investigated. She noted that her decision to maintain distance from her father and prevent him from meeting her children was intended to protect them. She expressed hope that justice would be fully served and that children's safety remains the primary focus.

Sources indicated that Meghan could not speak publicly about the 2018 letter because doing so might have jeopardized future investigations or exposed her to legal action. It is understood that the Rasp unit passed the letter to her shortly after her marriage to Prince Harry. The Metropolitan Police has not previously investigated Markle Sr and is not doing so now, according to officials. The force is making internal inquiries to confirm whether Rasp officers were involved in the decision to pass the letter to the duchess.

Markle Sr, who is currently in a rehabilitation center in Florida learning to walk with a prosthetic limb after a leg amputation, said he was shocked and hurt by the accusations. He stated that he could never do what he is being accused of and noted that the computers had not been in his possession since he left Rosarito, Mexico, in January 2025. He moved to the Philippines for a fresh start and returned to the US in May following a stroke. The interior secretary of the Philippines said national police have secured the computer for a full digital forensic examination, with results expected within one week.

The family dynamics have become further complicated by disagreements among the children. Samantha Markle, Meghan's half-sister, defended their father and accused Markle Jr of making up lies to generate income. She alleged that the claims surfaced days after their father cut off her funds and pointed out that the computers were out of Markle Sr's possession for two years, leaving room for potential tampering. The estrangement between Meghan and her father began when he missed her wedding to Prince Harry on health grounds. He has never met his grandchildren, Prince Archie, now seven, and Princess Lilibet, five.

The investigation highlights the complexities of international legal proceedings when family members reside in different countries. While the US and Philippine authorities are coordinating their efforts, the personal history of the Markle family adds a layer of scrutiny that extends beyond the legal facts. The duchess's statement provides new clarity on the timeline, suggesting that concerns were raised years before the current public controversy. As the forensic examination of the digital evidence proceeds, the outcome may determine whether criminal charges are filed or if the matter is resolved through other means.
