Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on Friday that he expects American mediation to facilitate a humanitarian operation in the occupied town of Oleshky. He described the conditions in the Kherson Oblast settlement as extremely difficult.
The general staffs of Ukraine and Russia announced that a ceasefire will take effect in the designated area from the night of October 27. This two-day pause is intended to allow for the movement of aid and the evacuation of residents from the combat zone.
Zelenskyy, speaking in a video address, confirmed that talks have been ongoing at various levels. He noted that Russia has mined the roads in the temporarily occupied part of the region. "Ukraine will do its part. We count on American mediation to work," he said.
The White House stated that US First Lady Melania Trump secured the truce. The administration described a humanitarian disaster as currently unfolding in the town. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Russia agreed to the ceasefire to enable the humanitarian mission.
Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine's Parliamentary Commissioner for Human Rights, specified that the operation is scheduled for October 29. The mission aims to restore access to the town, deliver food and medicine, and permit residents to leave the area.
