Melania Trump claims sole intermediary role in Oleshky truce
A six-day humanitarian pause begins Oct. 29, with the First Lady asserting she negotiated the terms directly with both Moscow and Kyiv.

Six days. That is the duration of the temporary ceasefire announced Friday for Oleshky, a Russian-occupied city in southern Ukraine. The truce is scheduled to begin on Thursday, Oct. 29. Its primary goal is to allow humanitarian aid to reach the population and facilitate the evacuation of civilians.
The office of First Lady Melania Trump stated that she acted as the "Exclusive Intermediary" for the agreement. She credited herself with initiating the talks and aligning Russian and Ukrainian leadership on the specific terms, procedures, and timing of the pause. This level of direct involvement is unusual for a first lady's office, as the announcement did not attribute the brokering to President Donald Trump or other senior administration officials.
Mrs. Trump described the situation in Oleshky as dire, noting that the remaining residents are mostly elderly people facing limited electricity, mined roads, and frequent military strikes. She said that without her intervention, providing medical care, food, and water would have been impossible. Under the new plan, non-military civilian leaders from both nations will visit homes to assess needs. Those choosing to leave will receive coordinated transportation, with some potentially traveling to Russia and others to Ukraine.
Newsmax, a conservative American media organization, has agreed to document the work of the joint Russian-Ukrainian teams on the ground. In a written statement, Mrs. Trump called the city a "front-line war city on the brink of disaster." She emphasized that the elderly population urgently required the medical attention and clean water that the ceasefire aims to deliver.
Neither Russia nor Ukraine has issued a public comment on the announcement yet. Ukrainian officials did indicate, however, that a tentative agreement has been reached for the occupied territory. White House communications director Steven Cheung praised the development on X, calling it "amazing news" and a "major, positive step towards peace." He stated that history would remember the First Lady's tireless work in this instance.
The announcement follows a recent phone call between Pope Leo and Russian President Vladimir Putin, in which the pope expressed concern about the humanitarian crisis in Oleshky. Mrs. Trump has previously worked to reunite 34 children with their families after their forced removal by Russia.
The truce arrives as President Trump's broader efforts to end the war have stalled. He has recently expressed frustration with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, suggesting Ukraine should have a new leader. Speaking to reporters earlier this week, Mr. Trump remarked that Russia has been "fine on Ukraine" and that they "haven't been doing much."
Oleshky remains under Russian control, and the ceasefire is localized to that specific city. The six-day window is intended to create a safe passageway for civilians. The arrangement relies on the cooperation of non-military officials from both sides to manage the evacuation and aid distribution process.
