Kylian Mbappe enters the Ballon d'Or ceremony in London holding the all-time record for World Cup goals, having scored 22 times in 22 matches at the 2026 tournament in North America. The figure places him ahead of Lionel Messi, who sits second with 21 goals, and Miroslav Klose in third with 16. Mbappe won the Golden Boot at the event, marking the second consecutive tournament in which he led the scoring charts.
The award covers the 2025-26 season, a period in which Mbappe failed to win a trophy at either the club or international level. He finished as the top scorer in La Liga with 25 goals and led the Champions League scoring with 15. Despite these individual statistics, Real Madrid finished second in the Spanish league and exited the Champions League in the quarterfinals against Bayern Munich. France placed fourth at the World Cup after losing to Spain in the semifinals and England in the third-place playoff.
Mbappe has publicly argued that his individual performance should outweigh the lack of silverware. "Being the all-time top scorer in World Cup history, overtaking all the great legends in the history of the sport in the most important tournament there is, is something that really stands out," he said last month. When asked who he was voting for, he replied, "Myself." He added that the prize recognizes a player, not a team, noting that the envelope will not name a group but a single individual.
His rivals have stronger trophy records. Lamine Yamal won the World Cup with Spain and La Liga with Barcelona. Harry Kane won three trophies with Bayern Munich, including the Bundesliga title. The absence of a major trophy is a historical hurdle, as every Ballon d'Or winner over the past decade has lifted at least one title in the award year. Ousmane Dembele won the prize in 2025 after helping PSG win the Champions League, while Rodri won in 2024 after claiming Euro 2024 and the Premier League.
The last player to win the award without a major trophy was Cristiano Ronaldo in 2013. That season, Ronaldo scored 66 goals for club and country while Real Madrid finished as league runners-up and Portugal failed to advance past the 2012 World Cup playoffs. Mbappe, who has been nominated nine times and placed third in 2023, now seeks to follow that precedent. Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has backed his player, stating that Mbappe is the one who made history this summer.
The ceremony takes place on Monday in London. The prize carries no cash award but increases a player's commercial value and status. Bookmakers do not currently list Mbappe as the favorite, yet he maintains that his record-breaking goal tally provides a compelling case for the honor.
