Gianni Infantino faces a more secure path to a fourth term at FIFA after securing endorsements from Asia and Africa. These shifts in support come after the president dismissed recent calls for his resignation as baseless. The move strengthens his position against European critics who pushed for a leadership change following the collapse of a commercial investment plan.

Infantino cited the backing of 211 member associations during an interview with the BBC. He stated that he was elected by these groups from around the world. The president argued that while FIFA contains differing points of view, a democratic system must respect the preferences of the vast majority. He laughed when asked if he had considered stepping down, signaling confidence in his current standing.

The Asian Football Confederation formally endorsed Infantino on Friday. AFC President Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa said the continent was united behind the current leader. This decision marked a reversal for the AFC, which had previously criticized the FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal alongside UEFA and CONCACAF. The confederation's change in stance has left Europe increasingly isolated in its opposition.

Infantino reported that all African countries also offered their support during a recent visit to Cape Verde. He said he is currently in talks with associations across the globe. These regional endorsements have solidified his base ahead of the formal nomination process, which concludes on November 18. The timeline allows potential rivals to submit their bids before the election takes place.

The controversy originated with the failed FIFA Forward Enterprise plan. The proposal sought private investment for a new entity to control commercial rights for major competitions. Infantino abandoned the scheme about three months ago, which triggered calls for him to step down. He later apologized at a FIFA Council meeting in Zurich for how the proposal was handled, a gesture that did not appease the football associations of Germany and England.

The president, 56, maintained a conciliatory tone during his comments. He acknowledged that bringing differing views together is not always easy. Infantino stated that it is acceptable to disagree but necessary to move forward. He said the final decision on who will run the organization rests with the member associations, who will vote for their preferred candidate.
