Barcelona and Real Madrid enter their Sunday match at Camp Nou locked in a 106-win tie that has stood for 124 years. The fixture, known as El Clasico, is set to determine which club holds the all-time victory lead in one of football's oldest rivalries.
The balance of power between the two clubs has shifted across decades. Early eras featured stars like David Beckham and Zinedine Zidane, while the 2000s and 2010s were defined by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Current squads feature Lamine Yamal and Raphinha for Barcelona, and Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham, and Vinicius Jr for Real Madrid.
Past encounters have often decided league titles and cup finals. On April 23, 2017, Barcelona won 3-2 at the Santiago Bernabeu. Sergio Ramos was sent off, and Messi scored the final goal to reach 500 career goals for the club. Real Madrid still won the 2016-17 La Liga title by three points.
In a 3-3 draw at Camp Nou on March 10, 2007, a 19-year-old Messi scored the first hat-trick of his career. He equalized in stoppage time after Barcelona played with 10 men. Both teams finished the season with 76 points, but Real Madrid won the title on head-to-head record.
Real Madrid's 4-2 home victory on April 10, 2005, showcased their Galacticos era. Zidane, Ronaldo Nazario, Raul, and Michael Owen scored for the hosts. Barcelona's Samuel Eto'o and Ronaldinho found the net, but Barcelona won the league by three points.
Perhaps the most lopsided result came on May 2, 2009, when Barcelona crushed Real Madrid 6-2 at the Bernabeu. Thierry Henry scored twice, and Messi, Carles Puyol, and Gerard Pique also netted. Barcelona won that season's league by nine points.
The rivalry extends to cup finals. In the 2011 Copa del Rey final, Real Madrid defeated Barcelona 1-0 in extra time. Cristiano Ronaldo headed in a pass from Angel Di Maria after a goalless 90 minutes. It was Real Madrid's first domestic cup since 1993 and their first trophy under Jose Mourinho.
