Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Sunday that he held a constructive conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump regarding a potential trade deal. The discussion aims to create jobs, lower family costs, and protect Canadian languages, culture, and sovereignty. Carney stated that his teams will work toward a specific outcome in the weeks ahead.

The recent optimism marks a shift from the standstill in August. At that time, Canada walked away from negotiations after rejecting U.S. demands that Carney said threatened national sovereignty, French-language protections, and the auto industry. Trump responded by imposing 50% tariffs on approximately $20 billion in Canadian goods, which prompted Canadian retaliation.

Talks have since resumed but have been uneven. Last week, Carney noted that negotiations intensified slightly and argued that progress occurred because Washington moved closer to Canada’s position. However, as recently as Wednesday, the Prime Minister said the countries were not yet in a position to reach an agreement before Tuesday’s midterm elections.

The two sides are currently discussing possible relief from U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel and automobiles. No details of a potential agreement have been announced. The trade dispute has become a factor in the Nov. 3 U.S. midterm elections, particularly in Michigan and Maine. Republican candidates in those states have faced pressure over tariffs hurting local businesses. Michigan Senate candidate Mike Rogers has called for an end to the tariff war.

Trump’s trade war and his repeated threats to make Canada the 51st U.S. state have pushed Carney to seek new markets. Canada and the European Union launched a new economic and security alliance on Friday. Carney is pursuing a goal of doubling Canadian exports outside the United States over the next decade.
