Barack Obama spent Saturday questioning the logic of the current U.S. trade strategy. Speaking to a crowd in Cleveland, Ohio, the former president mocked the administration’s decision to treat a close neighbor as a primary economic adversary. He described the ongoing conflict as a war with a well-known evil empire, specifically identifying Canada as the target.

Obama used humor to underscore the perceived absurdity of the situation. He noted that the country in question provided maple syrup and the comedian Martin Short to American culture. He characterized the Canadians as the nicest people and friendly neighbors to the north. He asked the audience why Donald Trump would pick a fight with such a group.

The former president has been active in campaigning for Democratic candidates ahead of the U.S. midterm elections. He argued that the tariffs have produced the negative effects many predicted. American consumers are currently bearing the weight of rising costs. These higher prices have weighed on Republican prospects in the midterms, particularly in states that share a border with Canada.

Trump announced on Friday that he plans to lift tariffs on some Canadian products. This move comes after two years of retaliatory measures between the two nations. The levies were originally justified by the administration as a response to alleged fentanyl trafficking and trade imbalances. Negotiations between the two sides collapsed in August.

Ottawa has not yet responded to the signal with optimism. Dominic LeBlanc, the Canadian trade minister, told CBC’s Power & Politics program that he does not expect a deal to be finalized before the November 3 vote. He stated that the two countries have been trading retaliatory tariffs since Trump launched his levy campaign last year.

Trump has made Canada a frequent target in his own campaign speeches. During a stop in Highland Heights, Kentucky, on October 17, he predicted that the two sides would eventually make an amazing deal. He claimed that the United States has lost billions of dollars over the years and that Canadian officials felt emboldened by that dynamic.

At the same event, Trump addressed the political leadership in Ottawa. He referred to former prime minister Justin Trudeau as a loser, a comment that drew cheers from the audience. He then turned his attention to the current leader, Mark Carney. Trump described Carney as a nice guy, but added that he is not nice when it comes to trade. He concluded that the Canadians are learning and suffering.
