Bavarian police arrested a 33-year-old German man on Friday night after a fire consumed the Kehlsteinhaus, a protected structure on the Obersalzberg peak. The building, widely known as the Eagle's Nest, was the former mountain retreat of Adolf Hitler. It now stands at an altitude of 1,834 meters in southern Germany.

Firefighters received the alarm at 9:15 pm when a smoke detector triggered. By 9:50 pm, crews arrived to find the entire structure on fire. Approximately 200 firefighters from six municipalities, along with the Bavarian Red Cross and mountain rescue teams, responded to the scene. No injuries were reported, and no one was inside the building when the blaze started.

Police spokesperson Lisa Maier stated that the location made the rescue difficult because the site could only be reached using heavy breathing apparatus. Strong winds, rain, and the first snow of the year complicated the efforts. Firefighters worked for several hours before withdrawing overnight. The fire was still burning at 7 am on Saturday and appeared to be out later that morning, though smoke continued to rise.

Investigators suspect arson, although an official cause has not yet been determined. The suspect has local ties but does not live in the immediate area. Prosecutors noted he displayed signs of mental illness and was being transferred to a psychiatric facility after questioning. Police said they would examine a political motive, though no evidence suggests other individuals were involved. A news conference was scheduled for Saturday.

The Kehlsteinhaus was built between 1937 and 1938 and inaugurated by Hitler in 1939. It is one of the few undamaged monuments from the Nazi era. Since 1952, the site has operated as a restaurant and hosts an exhibition by the Institute for Contemporary History regarding the regime's past. The building is owned by the Bavarian state government.

Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann told reporters that officials plan to restore the structure after consulting with local officials, historians, and conservators. He stated that the state was not going to leave a ruin in place and emphasized the importance of continuing the work of remembrance. Police closed the road leading to the retreat following the fire.
