The Kehlsteinhaus, the alpine retreat built for Adolf Hitler, is set for a full reconstruction after a fire consumed the structure on the Obersalzberg peak. The destruction marks a turning point for a site that has survived since 1938 with little change, forcing authorities to decide how to preserve its historical weight while restoring a popular landmark.

Emergency services received alerts at approximately 9:15 p.m. local time on Friday. Upon arrival, firefighters found the building completely engulfed in flames. No one was located inside the structure, and no injuries were reported. Authorities noted that local terrain conditions slowed the movement of fire trucks to the scene.

Police quickly identified a suspect. Prosecutors described the detainee as a 33-year-old German citizen with connections to the Berchtesgaden region, although he does not currently reside there. The suspect has been questioned and displayed signs of mental illness, leading to his placement in a psychiatric facility. Investigators are also examining the possibility of a political motive, a factor often considered given the building's history. Police stated there are no current indications of other individuals involved.

The site stands at an elevation of 6,017 feet. It was completed in 1938 and served occasionally as a temporary seat of government. The structure avoided Allied bombing during World War II, leaving it largely in its original condition. It now functions as a restaurant and beer garden, drawing visitors who view it as a rare undamaged monument from the Hitler era.

Joachim Herrmann, the Bavarian interior minister, confirmed the decision to rebuild during a press briefing in Berchtesgaden. He stated that the future design of the site will be determined through discussions with local officials, historians, and preservationists. Herrmann emphasized that authorities will not leave a ruin at the summit and expressed confidence in finding a sensible solution for the reconstruction.

The minister also noted the importance of continuing the work of remembrance associated with the site. The criminal investigation into the cause of the fire remains open as prosecutors review the evidence.
