A private Learjet 60 crashed into a residential neighborhood in Palm Beach County, Florida, on Sunday at approximately 12:50 p.m. local time, killing all nine people on board. The United States Department of Transportation confirmed the fatalities, marking the immediate end of the flight from Austin, Texas, to North Eleuthera in the Bahamas.
The aircraft, a medium-sized business jet manufactured by Bombardier Aerospace, measured 58 feet in length. Its maximum capacity allowed for two crew members and eight passengers, a configuration consistent with the number of victims identified. The plane had a maximum range of just over 2,400 nautical miles, a distance sufficient to cover the transatlantic segment of its intended route.
Federal aviation authorities stated that the Learjet 60 departed from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. It was bound for the North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas when it descended into the populated area near Cresthaven. The crash site is located in the vicinity of Military Trail, specifically between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North.
Sean Duffy, the U.S. Secretary of Transportation, labeled the event a horrible tragedy in a social media post. He expressed condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims. The Department of Transportation is working closely with the Federal Aviation Administration to monitor the situation and share updates as details emerge.
The National Transportation Safety Board and the FAA are leading the investigation into the cause of the crash. A team from the FAA was dispatched to the scene to support the NTSB's work. Both agencies will coordinate to determine the specific mechanical or environmental factors that contributed to the impact.
Local news reports indicate that the aircraft narrowly avoided striking several houses before coming down near a roadway. It is currently unknown whether the collision caused structural damage to the nearby buildings. The area is described as highly populated, with shops, workshops, homes, and schools in close proximity to the crash site.
Military Trail remains closed to traffic in both directions between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North. Authorities advised drivers to use alternate routes to avoid the area. Multiple police agencies and rescue units are present at the scene, with additional units continuing to arrive as of the afternoon of the incident.
