Latvia’s National Armed Forces recovered the wreckage of a drone that crashed on its territory on Saturday, October 24. The debris was located in the Alūksne district. The military announced the finding after a search that had previously been suspended.
The unmanned aerial vehicle likely entered Latvian airspace on October 18. The initial alert came from reports of a noise that sounded like an explosion. National Armed Forces and State Police officers began looking for a crash site immediately. They halted the search after two days because officials lacked enough information to determine the cause of the event.
An investigation into the incident is now active. Authorities also launched an internal review to assess how the event unfolded. The military confirmed that no civilians were injured. No damage was reported to civilian infrastructure. Officials stated that no further threats have been identified.
The discovery follows a similar event in neighboring Lithuania. On Sunday, October 18, wreckage from a suspected drone was found in the village of Juodžionys in the Pasvalys district. Lithuanian officials said the drone entered from Poland. Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius stated that the Lithuanian drone carried explosives.
Heorhii Tykhyi, a spokesman for Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, commented on the Lithuanian incident. He suggested Russian electronic warfare measures may have caused the drone to enter Lithuanian airspace. Tykhyi added that Ukraine expressed regret over the event.
