The arrival of a bag of diapers at a northwest Houston apartment on Saturday evening ended in three people being shot. The father of the infant brought supplies to the child's 19-year-old mother, a routine visit that turned violent when the two argued inside the unit.
Police say the man drew a firearm during the dispute. He fired one round into the back of the 40-year-old grandmother, who was present in the apartment. He then shot his own infant child in the abdomen. The mother of the baby was not hit by a bullet. She carried the wounded infant outside the building to safety while the gunman remained inside.
Officers from the Houston Police Department arrived at the complex on the 7700 block of Willow Chase Boulevard around 7:35 p.m. They found the suspect dead on the floor. He had a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Lieutenant Pulido of the Houston Police Department said officers performed CPR on the grandmother and applied a chest seal before paramedics took over.
Houston Fire Department paramedics transported both the grandmother and the infant to a nearby hospital. The 40-year-old woman was pronounced dead upon arrival at the medical facility. The infant is currently listed in critical condition.
The Houston Police Department Homicide Division has opened an investigation into the incident. Authorities have not released the names of the three individuals involved. They are waiting to notify the families of the victims and the deceased shooter before making public identifications.
