The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 178 additional measles cases in the United States this week, pushing the 2026 national total to 4,588. This figure is more than double the count recorded in 2025. The new data arrives amid intense scrutiny of the agency's transparency and ongoing structural changes to federal vaccine oversight.

The virus is currently active in at least 43 distinct outbreaks across the country. Pennsylvania accounts for the largest share, with 1,338 reported cases as of Friday. South Carolina and Utah also report major surges, with each state logging more than 500 infections. Health experts note that official numbers likely undercount the true spread, as common symptoms like fever and cough often do not prompt immediate medical visits.

Discrepancies have emerged in how deaths are tallied. State officials in Pennsylvania have recorded five measles-associated deaths and are investigating a sixth. The CDC has confirmed three national deaths but has not disclosed the location of the third case. This ambiguity has fueled debate over whether the federal agency is fully accounting for fatalities in the hardest-hit state.

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. reportedly asked senior CDC officials in September to remove one measles death from the official count. According to Reuters, Kennedy questioned whether the disease contributed to that specific death. His administration has also moved to alter the infrastructure surrounding vaccine safety monitoring.

The Department of Health and Human Services announced changes to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System, or VAERS. A new proposal would allow doctors to bill for reporting suspected vaccine injuries. VAERS has long been a point of contention, used by researchers to track rare safety issues and by critics to cite potential risks, regardless of causal evidence.

Kennedy has reshaped the advisory board that evaluates vaccine safety. He removed all 17 sitting members of the panel that previously assessed whether vaccine benefits outweigh risks. He replaced them with allies, a move a court blocked in March. Since taking office, the secretary has made various claims, including linking vaccines to autism and stating that the MMR vaccine contains aborted fetal tissue. These statements have drawn criticism from leading physicians who called his suggestion that vitamin A might help treat measles misleading.
