A 36-year-old British woman died in the Bahamas on Tuesday after a strong ocean current separated her from her two sons during a snorkeling excursion. The Royal Bahamas Police Force has opened an inquiry into the incident, which occurred near the southern tip of North Bimini.
Police reported that the woman was in the water with her husband and two children when the current pulled the boys away. As she swam to reach them, the force stated that the woman was also swept away. Both children were later pulled from the water and recovered.
Officers at the Alice Town police station received a report shortly after 10:00 a.m. that a woman was unresponsive at the North Bimini ferry dock. By the time police arrived at the scene, the woman had already been transported to a local clinic. Medical staff at the clinic pronounced her dead despite efforts to revive her. CPR was administered at the ferry dock after her body was recovered from the sea.
The police force confirmed that foul play is not suspected at this time. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the precise medical cause of death. A statement from the force noted that the family was identified as British nationals.
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office confirmed it is aware of the case. A spokesperson said, "Our thoughts are with the family of a British woman who has died in the Bahamas." The office stated that officials are in contact with local authorities and are providing support to the family.
Bimini is the closest Bahamian island group to the US mainland, situated between the large island of Andros and Miami. The location is known for its historical connection to author Ernest Hemingway and hosts a center for shark research.
