Moldova’s Prime Minister Vasile Tofan arrived in Kyiv on Monday, October 26, leading a high-level delegation tasked with securing energy supplies and coordinating European Union strategies.
The working visit includes high-stakes bilateral meetings with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi, and Ruslan Stefanchuk, the chairman of the Ukrainian parliament. Tofan is accompanied by three key cabinet members: Defence Minister Anatolie Nosatîi, Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu, and Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development Vladimir Bolea.
The presence of the energy and defence ministers signals that the trip prioritizes practical resource agreements alongside diplomatic alignment. According to the Moldovan government, the discussions between Tofan and Koretskyi will focus on strengthening trade cooperation and defining the paths for both nations toward the European Union.
Gas procurement remains a central economic objective. On October 12, Tofan stated that Moldova was considering purchasing natural gas from Ukraine to satisfy domestic demand. He indicated that he intended to negotiate these terms during this Kyiv trip. Earlier in the month, on October 14, Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal met with Tofan to discuss winter preparations and shared challenges in the energy sector.
Beyond one-on-one talks, the prime ministers are scheduled to participate in the Kyiv International Economic Forum. The event focuses on investment opportunities and the development of economic ties, themes that mirror the bilateral agenda outlined by Chisinau.
The visit occurs as Moldovan leadership prepares for potential demographic shifts in the region. President Maia Sandu recently stated that Moldova is ready to accept another wave of Ukrainian refugees if severe humanitarian conditions drive people to leave their homes.
